Classification of flame retardants

Functional additives that impart flame retardancy to flammable polymers often significantly inhibit the spread of fire in combustible materials with a small amount of addition.

Flame retardants are usually elements or compounds added to the flame-retardant substrate in the form of , and are thoroughly mixed with the polymer in a physically dispersed state. In gas phase or condensed phase they play a flame-retardant role through chemical or physical changes.

Flame retardants used in composite materials must meet the following performance requirements: high flame retardancy efficiency; good compatibility; suitable decomposition temperature; low toxicity, no pollution; excellent mechanical, electrical and weather resistance; good durability; wide sources and low cost, etc.

Classification of Flame Retardants

According to the mechanism of action: Condensed-phase flame retardants and gas-phase flame retardants

According to the main elements: Phosphorus-based, nitrogen-based, metal salts and their oxides

According to the type of compound: Inorganic compounds, organic compounds and composites

According to whether the processing process reacts with the matrix: Additive type and reactive type

According to whether the combustion process reacts with the matrix: Chemical type and filler type

According to particle size: Nano flame retardants and non-nano flame retardants
